Day 5 Time: 0 hrs Distance: 0.0 km (43.1) Awake at 10:00am, the rain and wind continue. We have a bunch of wet crap in the vestibule; the tent interior is thankfully pretty much dry. We lack much motivation today; tea & coffee don't happen for hours. I ventured out once briefly before returning to the shelter of the tent. We discuss the options; our current location while far from perfect is at least dry and protected. Ahead are a soggy portage and some hard paddling on Trout Lake without any info about campsites upcoming. It's worrisome that we might make only a modest distance, have more soggy gear and end up in another emergency camp. On the other hand, losing a complete day bothers me a bit. The hour's pass, we fiddle with stuff and procrastinate. AT 4:20 the decision is made, SPOT is activated for an ok message and we are officially staying over.

About 6:00pm we venture out, the rain has stopped, the wind continues briskly and it's cool. We spend the next while hanging up our wet stuff, Steve is using the stove as portable clothes dryer, and I'm utilizing wind only and actually making some progress. Time for a late lunch, usual chicken in a pouch with a wrap, cheese & crackers and tea. Steve is inspired to fish, first cast brings a modest pike, we fish some more, and Steve gets another one, as do I. We think about keeping one but of course don't catch anything else! Back to the formerly wet clothing which is now mostly dry or very close. We made a MIAB, Mexican Rice w/ Beef, we give it more than double time but it's still a little crunchy in spots.

It's been an interesting way to spend a day, stuck in our little space it's still better than being trapped in the tent. We sat around recording notes, munching and getting semi-organized for the following day. We really do need to make up some ground tomorrow, it will take 3 trips to finish the portage, it's flat all the way but it will be very wet for most of it, one good thing, even though you tend to sinking up to a foot deep it's not muddy, just a very spongy moss, still it's tough walking when carrying a load. Still very cool & windy at 12:45am, the tent provides nice shelter being noticeably warmer inside.
