Day 2

Time: 8 hrs

Distance: 11.9km (17.7)

I got up at 10:30 after nearly 11 hours of sleep, much needed since this was day 7 of the journey even if only the first proper day on the water. We had expectations that today would be a hard one, more logjams are likely and the current surely will increase. The bugs are plentiful here; we packed up and loaded the boats before taking down the hut (now known as the "dumphut") finally setting off at 1:20pm. Once again the river twists and turns, the current is strong in some places, we come to a half dozen logjams, each requires an examination and then a decision whether to try to dislodge, push through, or drag over, thankfully they are all pretty small and only cause minor cursing and delays. The high water has no doubt increased the current but I'm sure it's made the paddling easier overall. At some narrow spots we need to pull the boats along the shore a short distance or make 3 or 4 attempts at getting past a particularly fast spot.

The weather has been great all day, mostly clear skies and warm, on this small river we are constantly back and forth from sun to shade, much nicer than it would likely be if out in full exposure. We planned to camp by 7:30, when the time came the shore offered little in the way of useable spots, at 8:30 I started to look in earnest, scanning the shore and on two occasions getting out and inspecting, at 9:10 I spotted something with potential, a bit rough but there appeared to be a mossy area that we could squeeze the hut into after sacrificing a single small spruce tree. The mosquitoes were swarming here, leaving the hut means an extended killing session upon your return. At Midnight we finally had dinner, the full moon rose through the trees, the river passing by and the bugs buzzing (mostly) outside the hut.
